Cell Phone Buying Guide

Radio Band Support

Cell phones that support more radio band can pick up more frequencies. There are single-band, dual-band and tri-band phones, each increasing in frequency with the increase in band support. The tri-band phone has the greatest frequency, and is known to work globally.

Wireless Standard for International Calling

If you plan to use your cell phone internationally, there are several standard networks that are used by various cell phone providers. You'll want to be sure that your cell phone will be able to interact with the receiving phone when you arrive in another country if you're calling from one cell phone to another.

Dual-Mode Wireless vs. Single-Mode Wireless

Choosing dual-mode or single-mode wireless is an important decision. The two are distinctively different, and where you'll be located when using your phone will most likely determine your decision.

Dual-mode wireless phones can both send and receive digital and analog signals. This will benefit you tremendously if you communicate while in a rural area where the signals frequently go in and out. Dual-mode allows the phone to connect with a "back-up" analog signal. Roaming fees will normally apply in this case, however, when taking important calls with your cell phone, this feature can be priceless.

Single-mode wireless will be sufficient if you plan to use the phone primarily in a big city. Digital service is "on every corner", and a signal can almost always be found in any location. You'll save money if you're able to use a single-mode service.

Features to Make Life Easier

Many cell phones will come with extras to make life a little easier. Some of these might include voice recording or voice-activated calling options, phone books for storing your frequently called numbers, call history, speed dial. In addition, your plan provider might also offer caller ID, three-way calling and call waiting. Other features you might find useful include a built-in alarm, speakerphone or downloadable games for those boring rainy days!

If you feel that any of these features are a necessity, make sure they're available before commiting to a particular phone or plan.

Digital Camera

The digital camera feature has thrilled many cell phone users. This is a great way to share moments literally in a flash. If you select a phone that has this feature, you'll also want to be sure the provider supports the sending of photos digitally to other cell phones if that's your goal. These phones will normally have high-resolution display screens for more vibrant color.
